I thought it was high time to incorporate my love of good lists into this blog by way of a new recurring feature I'm calling "Friday Finds." Pretty exciting, huh? I could call it something less boring, but my sense of integrity won't quite allow me to call it "My Favorite Fascinating, Fabulous, Fashionable, and Fresh Finds That You Can't Live Without," because I feel like that would be overselling it just a tad. So, here are some of my favorite recent discoveries for your perusal, because I thought they might be useful and maybe even a little bit fascinating. Happy Friday!
1. No Mean City Indianapolis School Finder
I absolutely love this new website that serves both as a collection of (fascinating!) individual stories about life in Indy's neighborhoods, and as a helpful guide to finding what you need in Indy: a house, a neighborhood, a school, or something fun to do on the weekend. And their page on Indianapolis-Marion County school options is really great; in fact it's pretty much exactly what I had in mind when I thought about the need to spread the word about how many unique and different school options exist here in the city (I am planning some in-depth posts here on this blog about some of the most popular schools). But No Mean City has taken it one step further: you can actually take a quiz to find out which Marion County school is right for you, which is pretty genius. Online quizzes are fun, right? And especially when they actually provide you with useful information... which doesn't happen very often! Definitely check out No Mean City asap.
Okay, so I had to laugh a bit at this video because the announcer's voice is so completely over-the-top (I'm also not in any way a sports person, so maybe that makes the video extra unappealing to me). But this race actually sounds pretty cool, and my husband signed up for it with some of his co-workers. Here's what the description on the event website says: "The Indy Ultimate Urban Adventure Race presented by the Central Indiana Community Foundation (CICF) is the ultimate showcase of Downtown Indianapolis. Highlighting all that makes our city great, the Indy Ultimate will race through, over and around several of the city’s most iconic sports, arts, and military landmarks. Ever imagine what it’s like to kick a field goal at Lucas Oil Stadium or steal home at Victory Field? How about racing your friends up steps of the Indiana War Memorial, over obstacles in the American Legion Mall or through the Indiana State Museum? Run, walk or jog as you soak-in several once-in-a-lifetime experiences all within approximately six miles of the Circle City." The race is coming up on Saturday, April 30th.
3. #HumansofHCA on Instagram
I think this project is so beautiful and worthwhile, I just have to share it. Similar to the popular Humans of New York blog, bestselling book and social media phenomenon, Humans of HCA is an Instagram project by the Harrison Center for the Arts here in Indianapolis. HCA has compiled a collection of photographs of some of its studio artists, along with their own words about making art and their perspectives on life. Find it on Instagram or Facebook by searching for the hashtag #humansofhca. Here's one of my favorite quotes from the project so far:
"The idea of image and color is an integral part of the human story. Not the story that we would like humanity to be, but the one that it is. And so I think painting helps me tell the story of my life. . . . This is the way that I engage with life; through artwork." -- Nathan Foxton, a Harrison Center artist.
